Influencing with Character: The Cornerstone of Leadership Success

Earning trust and loyalty as a leader is perhaps one of the much-coveted situations by any people manager.  For this week’s article, we delve more on how it’s not just about expertise or authority – it’s about character.  It is the bedrock of true influence, and it’s what separates leaders who command respect from those who merely demand compliance.

Why Character Matters

Action speaks louder than words.  This is why one’s character, values, and the principles we consistently live by will shine through.  Attributes like integrity, honesty, and authenticity are magnetic traits that draw people in and inspire them to believe in you.  When your team sees that you ‘walk the talk’, you can expect that they will follow you naturally.

Being dependable can also be a manifestation of influencing with character.  People will have a natural tendency to want to know that they can count on you and not just because of work.  Your character becomes a silent yet powerful message that reassures your team.  Such behavior communicates:  “I’m here for the right reasons, and I’ll lead with your best interest at heart.”

How to Lead with Character?

Be Authentic: Walk the talk. Authenticity builds credibility and credibility fosters influence. Emphasize what’s important—show it through your behavior.

Show Empathy: Great leaders care about the people they serve. Listening and valuing perspectives demonstrates respect and strengthens connection.

Stay Consistent: It’s not the occasional good deeds; it’s about who you are every day. Consistency in your decisions, treatment of others, and dedication to your values make you someone others can rely on.

Admit Mistakes: No one is perfect and pretending to be only damages credibility. When you own up to your errors and work to make things right, you show humility and courage—two hallmarks of strong character.

The Ripple Effect of Character

When you lead with character and values as your anchor, this sets the tone for your entire team as well.  It can inspire others to hold to similar, if not higher standards.  The influence you build doesn’t just elevate you --- it also uplifts everyone around you.

For our call to action this week:  reflect on how your character shape your influence.  Identify one area where you can strengthen core character attributes this week.  Small changes can make a big impact.  And here’s our constant reminder to never forget—prioritizing inner peace. A leader who leads with character while staying centered in peace creates a legacy of trust and respect.
