Helping Others Find Their Voice: A Hallmark of Influential Leadership

Have you ever thought what’s the most fulfilling aspect of leadership?  For many influential leaders, facilitating for others to ‘discover their voice’ would be on the top list.  The unique blend of confidence, perspective and contribution that allows people to shine defines the so-called ‘voice’ at work.  And when you empower people to be able to authentically express themselves, your people shine more and so is your impact as their leader.

Creating safe spaces can be said as the precursor of helping people find their voice.  Employees need to feel heard and valued before they can really express themselves.  Actively listen during conversations with them, ask thoughtful questions and avoid dismissing ideas without getting more details.  Your openness communicate that what they say matters.

Be open to mentor.  Take interest in understanding people’s strengths, aspirations, and challenges.  Offer guidance and opportunities tailored to their growth.   When you invest in people’s development, you are practically giving them tools to ‘amplify’ their voice in meaningful ways.  Do not discount the power of encouragement.  Especially for people who may be struggling with self doubt, your trust can make a big difference.  Celebrate people’s wins, big or small, and remind them of their worth when they seem to need it.

Last on our checklist is leading by example.  Demonstrate what it means to use your own voice to drive results.  Advocate on what is/are essential.  Speak clearly and show integrity through your actions.  Your example becomes the blueprint for others to follow.

As we open a new week, identify someone in your team or workplace who could benefit from encouragement or mentorship.  This week, take one intentional step to support them – whether by recognizing their contributions or guiding them through some stretch assignments.  And while you’re at it, please be reminded that your inner peace is essential.  A leader who uplifts others while remaining grounded in peace creates a legacy of authentic influence.
